Age assessment forum

12 February 2020

We are delighted to invite you to an Age Assessment Forum on Wednesday 12 February 2020 hosted in partnership with Doughty Street Chambers. The event will be held at Doughty Street Chambers from 3-5pm.

Upper Tribunal Judge Coker has very kindly agreed to attend to encourage discussion between applicant and respondent representatives about improvements to practice and procedure in local authority age assessment cases in the Upper Tribunal. The event will involve brief presentations on the current practice and procedure and will address topics such as:

· Grants of permission
· Transfer to the Upper Tribunal
· Standard initial directions
· Disclosure
· Directions hearings
· Advocates’ meetings
· Full hearings
· Publication of judgments
· Costs

The Chatham House Rule will apply, i.e. participants can speak freely without having their identity revealed outside of the meeting or their views being attributed to their employers or clients. We trust this will be an excellent opportunity for representatives of both applicants and respondents to have their say about how these cases are conducted and discuss potential developments in the field. It is also an important opportunity to consider and debate whether there could be another, better way of deciding these cases.

The event will be followed by drinks and networking which it is hoped will allow for further sharing of ideas and discussion on best practice.
