We are delighted to welcome Ebun Sanusi as a probationary tenant. For the past year, Ebun has worked as an employed barrister at a local authority where she specialised in public children proceedings. She completed pupillage at the Government Legal Department.

Applications to start pupillage with us in September 2027 are open. We are offering 12- month pupillage to up to 2 successful candidates. The deadline for submitting your application is Thursday 22 January. Successful applicants will be contacted late March/April 2026 with a date and time for interview.

Dr Martina van der Leij acted for the local authority in public law proceedings concerning a 2-year-old child. The key issue before the court was how to protect the child given findings of domestic abuse by his father towards his mother. Ultimately, the court approved the local authority’s plan for the child.

Rebecca Handcock acted for a local authority in an Article 2 inquest before a jury concerning the death of a young woman. The local authority's social workers had assessed the young woman for detention under the Mental Health Act. However, she absconded and was fatally electrocuted.

Julian Date, Paula Diaz and Joanna Thom acted for the local authority in an application by the Sunday Times concerning the terms of a transparency order in care proceedings.

Dr Martina van der Leij represented the local authority in care proceedings concerning 2 children. The children came to the attention of the local authority when the 18- month-old was taken to hospital with multiple fractures. The case was complicated by the child's diagnosed health issues including genetic abnormalities,
