Advocate's Bar Pro Bono Awards have shortlisted us for Pro Bono Chambers of the Year and Harrison Engler  for Young Pro Bono Barrister of the Year.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 19 May in London.

About Harrison Engler's pro bono practice

Harrison Engler has a mixed practice in civil, family, housing, property, community care and public law.

In 2025, he spent 55 hours working on pro bono. Most notably, he acted (with Joanna Thom) in Re A (Appeal: Findings of Fact) [2025] EWHC 1279 (Fam) [2025] 4 WLR 72. The case involved representing the father in his successful High Court appeal against a 3-year-old rape finding in private family proceedings.

Mr Justice Hayden commented:

Mr Engler and Ms Thom have filleted F’s own discursive and frequently misconceived written arguments and recrafted them skilfully. I have found their help to be invaluable.

Even as a pupil barrister, Harrison was commended for his pro bono representation.

In 2024, he acted pro bono for the mother of a child with learning needs in a dispute with the child's father about their daughter's schooling and contact arrangements. The mother thanked him saying:

I am very grateful for his time, navigating me through legal complexities before the hearing, preparing the position statement and representation at the hearing. His help and support was invaluable and I could not [have] wished for a better representation at the court .

Since becoming a tenant, Harrison has continued to take on pro bono cases. Subsequently, each year he has been included in the England and Wales Pro Bono Recognition list for his commitment.

Our commitment to pro bono

As a set, we take part in various pro bono initiatives to positively impact individuals and communities. Each year, our barristers and staff vote for a charity to partner with for the following 12 months. Our support includes pro bono advice, fundraising and other volunteering for the charity.

Additionally in 2023, we signed up to Advocate's Chambers Pro Bono Framework - one of the 1st sets to do so.

And notably in 2025, we were 1 of only 3 Pro Bono Connect member sets given an engagement recognition award celebrating commitment to its scheme.

Our individual practice groups also offer specific pro bono support.

Family law:

Child Abduction Lawyers Association (CALA) - we are on the pro bono duty advocate rota.
Not Beyond Redemption - 3 members are assisting barristers.

Employment law:
Work Rights Centre- 2 of our barristers take on cases.

Housing law:
Chelmsford Law Clinic - 1 of our barristers volunteers each month.
