Rebecca Handcock acts in Bank Mellat v HM Treasury

19 June 2019

Rebecca Handcock acted for the UK Treasury and was part of its legal team in Bank Mellat v HM Treasury. The case settled on 18 June 2019. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

The bank, which is partly owned by the Iranian government challenged sanctions imposed on certain institutions in the Iranian banking sector. The sanctions had been introduced as a response to Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The restrictions had prevented the bank from doing business with the UK financial sector. The bank alleged this had caused them $1.7 billion  losses.

Rebecca’s role included working on a significant disclosure exercise involving national security-sensitive materials. She was also involved in preparing files for trial and assisting the wider government legal team.
